Iron Deficiency in Heart Failure

If you live with heart failure and still feel exhausted despite treatment, low iron may be part of the reason. Iron deficiency affects roughly 30–50% of people with chronic heart failure — often even when hemoglobin looks normal.

Symptoms of iron deficiency in heart failure

• Persistent fatigue and low energy
• Shortness of breath, especially with activity
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Pale skin
• Cold hands and feet
• Restless legs

Why IV iron instead of pills

Gut absorption of oral iron is often poor in heart failure. Intravenous iron refills iron stores directly, and cardiology guidelines recommend checking ferritin and transferrin saturation in heart failure patients and considering IV iron when they’re low, to improve symptoms and exercise capacity.

We check your iron studies in our in-house lab, coordinate with your cardiologist, and give IV iron in our Dublin infusion suite — usually covered by insurance.
